The story of my life

I've finally given in and decided that the world would be better if you knew more about my life. Egocentric? Yes. Worth Reading? No. Largely Pointless? Probably.

What are they smoking?

£425 for something that looks like a rather stylish coffin?

Apparently, this is actually a bargain - I know it's hard to believe, but Sony themselves have said so; their reasoning being that as a standalone Blu-Ray DVD player will probably be about £600, the gaming part of the PS3 really costs -£175. So that's all right. No word yet on the price of the "basic" version of the PS3, which won't do anything other than sit there and look pretty.

Right now, I can buy an XBox 360 for £280, or a "Core" XBox 360 for £210 - or at least I could if anyone had any in stock. That's still at the release price too, so it's not even as if it's dropped yet.

Wii pricing has yet to be formally announced, but most people are expecting around the $200 mark, given that every Nintendo console from NES to Gamecube has launched at that price (Although the price has varied in the UK). If that's accurate, we can expect a UK launch price of anywhere from £105 (Direct exchange rate) through £140 (With the usual ~35% markup we have to pay on these things) to £180 (If they're feeling gougey) - personally I expect it'll be about £140.

Given all of that and assuming (implausably) that the 360 stays at its current price until November, you'll be able to buy a 360 and a Wii and still have a fiver left over from the money you would have spent on a PS3. You can use that fiver to buy a classic DVD title to play on your 360.

Or, you could buy a PS3 and spend several hundred pounds re-buying all of your movies on Blu-Ray so that you can watch them in HD with a barely perceptible quality difference and no added value.
